Are you planning a trip soon and your calendar has already told you that your period is due on those dates? Yes, we know you think this may cause you discomfort. From experience, you know that travelling with your period is not a good plan. But what if we told you that we can make your life a little easier and that you can make the most of your trip by following our tips?

Luckily, there is life you can enjoy when you're on your period. Especially if you follow the tips below. So take note so that even your period doesn't stop you from enjoying your well-deserved holiday.

Going on holiday while on your period?

If you know that you will have your period during the days of your trip, it is advisable to think about your comfort above all else. Therefore, we recommend that you pack your suitcase with comfortable clothes, light if it is summer, that do not compress your belly area. During your period, the stomach area tends to swell and cause discomfort. For this reason, it is best to avoid tight trousers, which will further increase this discomfort.

Pack cotton trousers and breathable fabrics to avoid humidity in the crotch area. In fact, if you can wear dresses, all the better. They won't stick to your body and you'll be much more comfortable. If you spend many hours away from the hotel or flat where you are staying, you will need to be as dry and breathable as possible to avoid the discomfort caused by moisture in the crotch area. In addition, to avoid possible vaginal infections due to humidity.

Another reason to choose comfortable, loose-fitting clothes is the heaviness in your legs. When we go on a trip, we often walk for long days. However, this can become torture if you are on your period, as menstruation tends to make your legs more tired and numb. Our recommendation is that, when you get to the hotel, you take the opportunity to take a cold shower on your legs, you will see how they appreciate it and you, too.

On the other hand, when packing your suitcase you should take into account other items or objects that will come in handy for your period. This is the case of disposable tissues, for when you have to enter public toilets, restaurants, museums and they don't have toilet paper. Hand sanitiser is also essential. There will be cases where bathrooms do not have running water or sinks and you cannot wash your hands before and after you leave the bathroom.

If you're travelling to beach destinations or if your hotel has a swimming pool, a bikini or swimming costume is a must in your suitcase. Luckily, there are both options for when you're on your period. Both menstrual swimming costumes and menstrual bikinis are designed so that you can enjoy a nice dip without menstruation being an impediment. Also, if you're travelling as a family and you have teenage daughters or girls who have their periods, we recommend packing a menstrual bikini or swimming costume for girls in your suitcase. You know that in the early years of menstruation for girls, the arrival of menstruation is irregular, so it is advisable to protect yourself against a surprise situation.

Drink plenty of water. Super important! If you are travelling in summer, it is even more important. The tiredness of walking all day, queuing and sightseeing, added to dehydration, will accentuate menstrual discomfort and make you feel even more uncomfortable. Another important issue is food, we know that when we travel we want to try all the delicious and different things that are typical of the place and that we usually don't have at home. This, added to the fact that when we are on our period, we crave all kinds of snacks and sweets (sometimes unhealthy), can make premenstrual symptoms worse and increase abdominal bloating.

Don't forget to pack your menstrual cup. Even if you prefer menstrual panties, we recommend having a menstrual cup in your luggage. You'll find that while you're out and about enjoying the city you're visiting, it will be very convenient to use. Made from medical grade silicone, you can wear it for up to 8 hours at a time without worrying about having to change it or wash it. You can even wear it while you sleep.

Our recommendation is to get the menstrual cup + sterilising cup option, which is the most practical option for taking your menstrual cup on the road. There are many reasons to choose this option:

Firstly, the sterilising cup will serve as a case to store and protect your menstrual cup while you are not using it. This way you will have it clean, sterilised and protected when you carry it in your suitcase or bag. Secondly, the sterilising cup is very easy to use to keep your cup sanitised and bacteria free. You can use it both in public places and once you arrive at your hotel.

And if you prefer, you can also find this alternative in a menstrual disc + sterilising cup format, if that's more convenient for you.

On the other hand, if you already have your menstrual cup or disc, but are unsure whether or not to take it on your trip, we recommend having a steriliser to keep your cup or disc clean and disinfected during your trip. This way, you'll be more relaxed and protected against infection while you're away from home.

When you need to clean your menstrual cup on the road, just pour water inside the cup when the cup is inside and shake it so that the water cleans your cup. Then empty the water through the three little holes on the surface. And when you arrive at your accommodation, put your cup back in the steriliser and add water, put everything in a microwave for 2-3 minutes and your cup will be bacteria free for a new use.

The great thing about this pack, apart from the above, is that it is very small and light. So you won't mind having to carry it around in your bag with the rest of your things all day long, while you're out sightseeing.

Another of our recommendations is to pack a pair or two of menstrual panties in your suitcase in case you don't feel like using a menstrual cup on any given day. Without a doubt, they are the perfect underwear item when you're travelling and your period comes. They are not tight and are comfortable to wear. They are made from bamboo cotton, so they are breathable, leaving you free of moisture and odours. These breathable materials make walking around the city on hot days much more pleasant, while also avoiding sweaty skin irritation and having to stop to change pads all the time.

In addition, our menstrual panties are designed with an anti-leakage and anti-bacterial system so you are 100% protected during your trip. And finally, another advantage of menstrual panties is that you can find them in different models and types, depending on your clothing needs and your style.

Another must-have in your suitcase when travelling with your period is a first aid kit with over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, which will come in handy when menstrual cramps start to bother you. That way, they won't stop you from enjoying your trip for a second.

Another recommendation for travelling with your period is to use period apps. If you don't already use them, you should start doing so, both for travel and for everyday life. Period apps will be of great help to you to mark exactly which day you will get your period, something that, in our opinion, is of great help when you are travelling and you know that, yes or yes, you will get your period. In addition, the application will help you plan your trip better, knowing which days are best for you to do one type of excursion or another, depending on your menstrual period and the day you are on. Because when you're on your period, there are days when you don't feel like doing anything, and others when you feel like eating the world...

What to do during your trip if you get your period?

While travelling, you should maintain good intimate hygiene to avoid vaginal infections. To do this, empty your menstrual cup every 8 hours (maximum 12 hours). As we said before, food is essential to feel good, so avoid sugary or salty foods and alcoholic drinks, caffeine, caffeine, theine...

Use the toilets whenever you can, there will be times when you need to and can't, and you'll probably regret not having done so in the one you found half an hour ago...

And finally, enjoy your trip and your holiday. Even menstruation shouldn't ruin that trip you've been looking forward to for so long and so eagerly.
