¿Puedo usar la copa menstrual llevando DIU?

Can I use a menstrual cup with an IUD?

For some time now, one of the most frequent doubts related to the use of the menstrual cup is whether it is compatible with the use of an IUD. If you, like many other women, use this contraceptive system, read on because this information is of interest to you.

In this article we will answer this question, along with others related to the use of a menstrual cup with an IUD.

Is it possible to use a menstrual cup with an IUD?

The answer is yes. You can wear a menstrual cup at the same time as an IUD. The two are perfectly compatible. However, our recommendation is that you consult with your gynaecologist in case he/she has to cut the threads of the IUD a little more so that they don't rub against the cup every time you insert it. In case you didn't know, the IUD has threads at the bottom that protrude through the cervix. It is important that these threads do not exceed 3 cm in length, otherwise you may accidentally move the IUD when you remove your menstrual cup.

Another thing to keep in mind when combining these two devices is that gynaecologists recommend waiting at least 3 months after inserting the IUD before using the menstrual cup.

Be sure to remove the vacuum when removing your cup. As you know, when inserting the menstrual cup, you must create a vacuum effect inside the vagina. This will ensure that the menstrual cup sticks to the walls of the vagina to prevent leakage. When you take it out, you must break this vacuum. If you don't do this, there is a chance that you will move the IUD and pull it out.

What is the chance of the IUD coming out when using a menstrual cup?

Recent studies show that in 17% of cases the IUD was dislodged when the cup was removed. This is due to the area of the vagina where the cup is placed, the cervix, coinciding with the threads of the IUD itself.

However, it's not all bad news. Luckily we have the perfect alternative: menstrual pads. These are much more compatible with the IUD, as there is no risk of the menstrual cup creating a vacuum effect when it is inserted.

What is an IUD?

It is a method of contraception, an intrauterine device, which is placed inside the uterus. It is a small T-shaped device from which threads hang at the lower end, which end just at the edge of the vagina. There are copper or hormone-based IUDs.

The IUD is placed inside your uterus to help prevent pregnancy, while the menstrual cup is placed in your vagina to collect your menstrual flow. It is precisely because of these threads, just mentioned, that they should never touch your menstrual cup. Depending on the position of your cervix (low, medium or high) you should make sure that the threads are always inside the cup and never on the side or protruding.
